What types of surgery are available for spinal injuries?

We have worked with many clients who have suffered a spinal injury as a result of an accident. The most common of these spinal injuries is a lumbar herniated disc. The good news is that about half of those diagnosed with a lumbar herniated disc will recover within six months as inflammation subsides. However, about 10% of herniated disc patients will require some form of surgery. In the event that you or a loved one experiences a spinal injury, it can be both emotionally and physically demanding—not to mention a financial burden. Only a qualified medical professional can advise you of your necessary treatment, but the following are the most commonly performed procedures.

Foraminotomy
A foraminotomy is a surgical procedure that aims to relieve pressure on a nerve when the pressure is caused not only by the disc, but also bone or other tissues. Whatever is causing the pressure is removed to ease compression of the nerve. And while this is good news, the healing process should still be taken into account.

Discectomy
A discectomy, sometimes called an open discectomy, is a less invasive surgical procedure than a foraminotomy. Only the portion of the disc that is causing the nerve compression is removed. This surgery may also ease bulging or ruptured discs. It is often the most effective and common surgery if non-surgical treatment has proved ineffective. Though common, the surgery can be costly, so you will want to make sure you are working with a dedicated legal team.

Percutaneous Discectomy
If the discs have not ruptured, a percutaneous discectomy may be performed. This surgery involves making a small incision in the back and inserting a special tool. The offending disc tissue is then removed. Often less effective than open discectomy, percutaneous discectomy is not performed as frequently and its utilization may be considered experimental. Again, such a procedure can be quite expensive, so be sure you get proper legal representation.

Laminectomy
Sometimes pressure on the spinal cord or spinal nerve roots is not caused by a disc, but rather age-related changes in the spine. When this occurs, a laminectomy may be performed. Laminectomy is a surgical procedure wherein a portion of the lamina, a thin protective covering on the spinal cord, is removed. This procedure may be performed on its own or at the same time as a discectomy.

Spine Fusion (BMP)
In a spine fusion, BMP is used to stimulate bone growth and two vertebrae are joined as one. The negative aspect is that flexibility and movement between these two vertebrae is then eliminated, as they are now a single bone. Spine fusion is commonly performed to treat problems such as unstable spine (spondylolisthesis).

Spinal Instrumentation
Spinal instrumentation is a permanent solution to treat instability in the spine. It is a surgical procedure wherein stainless steel, titanium, titanium alloy, or even non-metallic devices are inserted into the spine. Depending on the injury, these devices may be rods, screws, plates, cables or a number of other shapes in varying sizes. Cages may also be installed, which serve as simple structures that new bone can then grow through or around.

Spinal Disc Replacement
Spinal disc replacement is a newer surgery but is becoming increasingly popular. Whereas the other treatment options listed above remove the disc and/or other tissue, this procedure replaces the damaged disc. The benefit is that mobility isn’t sacrificed since the offending disc is replaced with one that is new and undamaged. Where cadaver discs were once commonly used, there is now a trend towards utilizing artificial discs instead. However, due to the nature of the complex mobility required, discs are not easy to recreate synthetically.

If you have been involved in an accident resulting in a spinal injury, it is important to know the rights and options available to you. Hopefully you will not require surgery, but if you do, you will need someone on your side as medical bills pile up and insurance companies fight your claim.
