Hello, I am attorney James E. Simmons. I was born in Bad Nauheim, Germany and later relocated to North Carolina when my father retired from the US Army. Growing up, I was taught to work hard, be persistent, fight for what was right, and never shy away from helping someone in need. It was these core concepts that pushed me to seek public service and one day become a lawyer.
While pursuing my undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, I joined the Pi Zeta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. I was drawn to this organization because of its aims: scholarship, manly deeds, and love for all mankind. Alpha Phi Alpha introduced me to various public service opportunities such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, March of Dimes, Adopt a Highway, and various mentorship programs in the Greensboro, North Carolina area.
After obtaining my undergraduate degree, I attended Florida A&M University College of Law in pursuit of my Juris Doctorate. While in law school, I served as the President of the Student Bar Association, organized neighborhood clean-up events for impoverished neighborhoods, served as a mentor for area high school students, and helped sponsor events to provide clothing, school supplies, food, and haircuts for underprivileged youth.
Once I obtained my law degree, I realized that I could make the most impact on people’s lives if I took the time to understand the inner workings of insurance companies. Therefore, I spent five years as a civil defense attorney defending large insurance companies on various claims stemming from motor vehicle accidents, slip and falls, nursing home abuse, negligent security cases, employment discrimination and medical malpractice. I invested this time during my legal career so that I could learn about each particular insurance company’s claim handling strategy, goals, and the red tape that they use in evaluating a person’s claim. I learned, from the inside, how to navigate their claims handling processes and I obtained the tools that would one day help my future clients succeed in obtaining justice.
Today, as a part of Dan Newlin & Partners, I am realizing my goal in pursuing justice on behalf of those who were injured by the negligence of others. It would be an honor to represent you and I look forward to earning your confidence in representing your interests. Thank you for visiting my biography page and taking the time to read my story.
