What if I’m Hit by an Automobile While Riding My Bicycle?

Your auto insurance policy should cover some of your expenses anytime you are involved in an accident involving an automobile. This means you will be covered whether you’re walking, riding a bike, scooter, skateboard, etc..

In other words, as long as a car was involved, you should be able to receive benefits even if you weren’t in the car during the time of the accident.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Florida state law requires every driver to carry Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage on their insurance policies. This coverage provides for up to 80% of your medical bills (up to $10,000). In addition, PIP pays a portion of lost wages and also helps cover mileage reimbursements to and from medical facilities for as long as you receive treatment for the injuries sustained during the accident.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage
If you don’t have PIP, you may still be able to receive benefits from the at-fault driver’s insurance. If the at-fault driver does not have insurance, you should be able to file a claim against your Uninsured Motorist Coverage. This can be done using either your insurance policy or the policy of a family member you live with.
